Growing up in Bedfordshire, England, on a steady diet of American country, folk and soul records from her Anglo-Indian grandmother’s collection, Danni Nicholls spent years dreaming of Nashville long before she ever set foot there. More than a decade, several critically acclaimed albums and countless miles later, the British-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter has built a loyal international audience through honest songs, soulful performances and a deep commitment to her craft.
Now, with the release of her fourth studio album, Making Moves, Nicholls delivers her most personal and self-assured work to date. Produced by Sarah Peacock and recorded in Nashville, the album is a powerful reflection on transformation, resilience and finding the courage to step into a new chapter. Across eleven richly crafted songs, Nicholls explores love, loss, freedom, self-discovery and the often messy process of moving forward. The album’s title speaks not only to change itself, but to the decision to keep choosing growth, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
Written during a period of significant personal transition, Making Moves finds Nicholls embracing vulnerability while standing firmly in her own strength. From the restless optimism of “Free Wheel” and the tender intimacy of “I Want You” to the hard-won wisdom of songs like “The Wreckage” and the title track, the album showcases her gift for combining emotional depth with memorable melodies and beautifully observed storytelling. Featuring collaborations with acclaimed songwriters including Mary Bragg, Amelia White, Michele Stodart, Hannah Smith, Robby Hecht, Claire Kelly, Brian Sutherland and Kyshona Armstrong, the record captures an artist operating at the height of her powers.
“I’ve always been interested in the space where strength and vulnerability meet,” Nicholls explains. “The older I get, the less interested I am in pretending I’ve got everything figured out. These songs are about learning to live with uncertainty and finding beauty in that process.”
A three-time nominee at the Americana Music Association UK Awards, Nicholls has spent years carving out her own distinctive space within the Americana landscape. Her music has appeared in the hit television series Sons of Anarchy, while her captivating live performances have taken her across the UK, Europe and North America. Along the way she has shared stages with Lucinda Williams, The Secret Sisters and Sturgill Simpson, and appeared at leading festivals including Cambridge Folk Festival, Tønder Festival and AmericanaFest.
Known for songs that balance vulnerability with strength, Nicholls writes with warmth, wit and emotional honesty. Whether exploring heartbreak, hope, belonging or reinvention, her work is rooted in a belief that music can help us better understand ourselves and each other.
As a proud LGBTQ+ artist, Nicholls is passionate about representation, authenticity and creating music that helps people feel seen. Making Moves feels like the culmination of everything that has brought her to this point—a record born from experience, shaped by perseverance and delivered with the soulful voice and heartfelt storytelling that have become her trademark.
“I don’t think this record is about having arrived anywhere,” she says. “It’s about having the courage to keep going. To keep growing. To keep choosing yourself. That’s what making moves means to me.”
For Danni Nicholls, songwriting has always been about connection. Through every album, every mile travelled and every new beginning, that remains the constant: a desire to tell honest stories and bring people together, one song at a time.
